Hey there! So, let me take you on a journey through my experience of living in Setúbal, Portugal, for the past year. Trust me, it's been quite the adventure!

From the moment I set foot in this charming coastal town, I was immediately captivated by its unique charm and laid-back vibe. Picture this: quaint cobblestone streets lined with colorful buildings, the salty breeze from the nearby ocean, and the sound of seagulls overhead. It was like stepping into a postcard.

One of the first things that struck me about Setúbal was its incredible food scene. Oh boy, where do I even begin? Fresh seafood galore! From grilled sardines to succulent octopus, every meal was a culinary delight. And let's not forget about the famous local delicacy: "Choco Frito", fried cuttlefish with a squeeze of lemon. Absolutely mouthwatering!

But it's not just about the food here; it's the whole dining experience. Picture yourself sitting at a cozy outdoor café, sipping on a glass of crisp Vinho Verde as you watch the world go by on one of many plazas. Ah, pure bliss.

Now, let's talk about the sights. Setúbal is blessed with stunning natural beauty. Miles of pristine beaches, sand dunes, and pine forests stretched out before me, making it the perfect spot for a day of sun, sea, and relaxation. And then there's the historic center of Setúbal itself. Wandering through its winding streets, I stumbled upon hidden gems at every turn. From centuries-old churches to vibrant street art, there's always something new to discover.

Living in a new place comes with its challenges too. Like trying to navigate the local language, Portuguese. Now, as a Brazilian, I thought I had it mastered, but I can assure you, the accent can be quite tricky for newcomers. However, the locals are friendly and always willing to lend a helping hand. Take Senhor Valter, for example, the man who owns the local print shop. He's always there to help you when you need anything printed, and he does it with a smile.

I've also had the pleasure of meeting the lovely couple Dona Lurdes and Senhor Carlos, owners of a cute art gallery/art class/cafe/events space right near the Bocage plaza. Their warmth and hospitality made me feel right at home, and their passion for art is truly inspiring.

As for tips for anyone thinking about visiting or even living in Setúbal, here's what I've learned:

  1. Embrace the siesta culture: Don't be surprised if shops and businesses close for a few hours in the afternoon. It's the perfect time to relax and recharge before heading out for the evening.

  2. Explore beyond the tourist hotspots: While places like Tróia and the historic center are must-sees, don't be afraid to venture off the beaten path. You never know what hidden treasures you might uncover.

  3. Take advantage of the fresh produce markets: Setúbal is known for its abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood. Head to the local market "Mercado do Livramento", for some of the best produce.

All in all, my first year in Setúbal have been nothing short of magical. From the delicious food to the stunning scenery, this charming town has truly captured my heart. So if you ever find yourself craving a taste of authentic Portuguese life, I highly recommend venturing 40 minutes south of Lisbon to Setúbal. You won't be disappointed!
